Background of the Study :
Science boot camps are intensive, short-term programs designed to immerse students in STEM subjects through hands-on activities, workshops, and collaborative projects. In Kwaya Kusar LGA, Borno State, where traditional educational methods have often fallen short in engaging students, science boot camps offer an innovative approach to ignite interest and improve practical skills in STEM. These boot camps are structured to provide immersive experiences that blend theoretical instruction with real-world applications, thereby facilitating deeper learning and enhanced problem-solving abilities (Ibrahim, 2023). The interactive and experiential nature of boot camps helps students overcome the limitations of conventional classroom settings, where passive learning predominates. Recent evidence suggests that participation in intensive boot camp programs can lead to improved critical thinking, teamwork, and adaptability, skills that are essential for success in rapidly evolving STEM fields (Ogbonna, 2024). In Kwaya Kusar LGA, the introduction of science boot camps has the potential to address longstanding issues related to low student engagement and poor academic performance in STEM subjects. These programs not only provide access to modern scientific tools and methodologies but also create an environment where students can interact with mentors and industry professionals. However, challenges such as limited funding, logistical constraints, and a shortage of qualified facilitators may affect the overall impact of these boot camps. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of science boot camps in enhancing the academic performance and practical skills of STEM students in Kwaya Kusar LGA. By integrating both qualitative and quantitative research methods, the study will assess student outcomes, participant satisfaction, and the sustainability of the boot camp model in a resource-limited setting. The findings will be instrumental in guiding educational reforms and in the allocation of resources to support innovative teaching methodologies in Borno State (Yusuf, 2025).

Statement of the Problem :
In Kwaya Kusar LGA, Borno State, traditional STEM education has struggled to engage students meaningfully, resulting in poor academic performance and a lack of practical skills essential for modern scientific careers. Despite the introduction of science boot camps as an innovative intervention, their overall effectiveness in addressing these challenges remains underexplored. Many boot camps face significant hurdles including limited funding, inadequate infrastructure, and the unavailability of trained facilitators, which may compromise the quality of the program. Consequently, students may not derive the anticipated benefits from these intensive learning experiences, leading to a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application (Abubakar, 2024). Furthermore, the sustainability of the boot camp model in a resource-constrained environment remains questionable. There is insufficient empirical evidence regarding the long-term impact of these programs on student performance and skill acquisition. The lack of consistent follow-up and integration of boot camp experiences with regular classroom instruction further undermines their potential benefits. This study seeks to investigate the impact of science boot camps on the academic performance and practical competencies of STEM students in Kwaya Kusar LGA. It will identify the factors that hinder the effective implementation of these programs and explore potential strategies to enhance their success. Addressing these issues is critical for ensuring that science boot camps can serve as viable alternatives to traditional teaching methods, thereby contributing to the overall improvement of STEM education in the region (Sani, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of science boot camps on STEM student performance in Kwaya Kusar LGA.

  • To identify challenges affecting the implementation of science boot camps.

  • To recommend strategies to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of boot camps in STEM education.

Research Questions:

  • What impact do science boot camps have on the academic performance and practical skills of STEM students?

  • What are the key challenges hindering the effective implementation of boot camps in Kwaya Kusar LGA?

  • How can science boot camps be improved to better serve the educational needs of students in STEM?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Participation in science boot camps significantly improves STEM academic performance.

  • H2: Inadequate resources and training negatively affect the outcomes of boot camp programs.

  • H3: Enhanced program design and integration with school curricula lead to better long-term benefits for students.

Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it assesses the effectiveness of science boot camps in transforming STEM education in Kwaya Kusar LGA. The research will provide valuable insights into how immersive, short-term programs can bridge the gap between theory and practice. The findings will inform policymakers and educational stakeholders about the necessary improvements to optimize boot camp models, ultimately contributing to higher student achievement and a more skilled workforce in STEM (Garba, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Science Boot Camps: Intensive, short-term educational programs focused on hands-on STEM learning.

  • STEM Students: Learners engaged in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education.

  • Kwaya Kusar LGA: A local government area in Borno State facing challenges in traditional STEM education.
